Field Tests in Rwanda and Kenya Confirm Accuracy and Durability

December 15, 2015

DripAssist Field Test Findings

Drip sets come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and slight variations in manufacture change the shape and volume of the drops created. These variations have been shown to cause an up-to 40% over-infusion rate over time – a critical margin in many cases.

For this paper, we performed field tests in Rwanda and Kenya to determine the DripAssist's accuracy in varying conditions. We gathered and analyzed quantitative flow rate data to determine the accuracy of infusion gravity drip flow. We also took note of many qualitative aspects of the tests we performed. The drip sets we used were manufactured by Apex Medical Devices in India and procured from a local hospital in the Rwandan city of Butare.

To determine DripAssist’s dependability over a protracted period of time, we tested a unit in the Mama Maria Clinic in Muburu Bay, Kenya for a period of twelve months.

Conclusion: While gravity infusion has traditionally been prone to error, and drip sets vary in quality and therefore accuracy, the addition of a DripAssist device delivers a high accuracy rate – a notable innovation in low-cost, high-quality healthcare.
